Stop Calling Spending An Investment

Here's a question for you. When was the last time the federal government admitted it was simply spending your money? Think about it. You don't hear that anymore. Every dollar has become an investment. Every program is historic. Every bill is transformational. Somewhere between the Constitution and today's press releases, plain English disappeared. You ever notice that nobody in Washington ever asks for your money anymore? Nobody says, give me your money? That would be honest, and honesty doesn't poll well, no. They ask for an investment. It's always an investment. Congress hasn't asked for a dollar in 40 years. They've only made investments, trillions of dollars of investments, and I'm still waiting on my statement. I would like to see the portfolio. I would like one graph, one single graph, showing me the return on the investment they made in 1965 that's still losing money in 2026. Show me the guy at the pension fund who'd keep his job after 60 straight years of losses. He wouldn't. He'd be in a different line of work, possibly a different country. I'm Walt Blackman, combat veteran, former Army Tank Commander, Arizona State Representative, and a man who still reads the fine print. Here's the show today. Why The Founders Worked In Secret

Summer of 1787, Philadelphia. It is miserable. No air conditioning, closed windows, and 55 men in wool coats arguing for four straight months about how much power one country can survive giving itself. And here's the detail almost nobody teaches. They locked the doors, they nailed the windows shut in the heat of a Philadelphia summer, and they took an oath of total secrecy. No leaks, no press conferences, no live tweeting, the debate. George Washington himself got furious when he found a stray page of notes on the floor and demanded to know who dropped state secrets where any tourist could pick them up. Now I know what the modern instinct says. Secrecy sounds bad, sounds like smoke-filled rooms, sounds like something's being hidden from you. Except here's what actually happened behind those locked doors. The delegates were free to change their minds. Argue a position on Monday, get proven wrong by Wednesday, switch sides by Friday, without a headline the next morning calling them a flip-flopper or a traitor to the cause. They weren't performing for an audience, they were trying to get it right. Compare that to how we write laws today, where half of Congress is more worried about the 30-second clip than the 60-year consequence. The founders bought themselves room to actually think by refusing an audience. That's not a scandal. That's how serious work sometimes gets done. Out of that sealed room came a plan nobody thought would survive. Thirteen broke states, no functioning national government, foreign powers running odds on collapse and reasonable odds because for the entire run of human history up to that point, self-government by ordinary citizens had never once been sustained at scale. Kings, emperors, warlords, that was government. The idea that regular people could run the thing themselves for more than a news cycle was considered adorable and doomed. So when Benjamin Franklin walked out of that hall and a woman named Elizabeth Powell asked him point blank what they'd created, his answer wasn't a victory lap. It was a warning wrapped in 11 words. A republic, if you can keep it. Not if Congress can keep it, not if the president can keep it, not if nine robed lawyers in Washington can keep it. If you can keep it. And that sentence has been sitting there for 230 plus years waiting to see if we were going to take it seriously or just put it on a coffee

Gridlock Is A Freedom Feature

mug. Every single year, somebody on television gets furious that Congress can't get anything done. Gridlock, they call it, broken system. And every single year I want to hand that person a copy of Federalist 51 and a cold drink because they are angry at the smoke detector for going off during a fire drill. James Madison wrote the whole justification in one sentence. If men were angels, no government would be necessary. Translation for anybody who skipped that class. People are not naturally trustworthy with power, so don't build a system that assumes they are. That's why the Constitution didn't hand the keys to one guy, one office, or one branch. Article one, Congress writes the laws. Article II, the president carries them out. Article III, the courts referee, the whole thing. Three separate rooms, each one able to slam the brakes on the other two. And listen, dictatorship is fast. I'll give it that. One man signs one paper and it's done by lunch. No debate, no delay, no committee hearing droning on for six hours while a senator reads a statement nobody asked for. Efficient? Absolutely. Also, the single most dangerous word in the history of government because a system fast enough to hand you everything you want is fast enough to take everything you have on the same afternoon with the same pen. So next time the news anchor sighs about how nothing gets done in Washington, I want you to sigh right back and ask, done for whom and at what cost to you? Slow was never the malfunction. Slow was the receipt for your freedom.

Sowell’s Four Questions For Spending

Segment three, recurring bit, compared to what? All right, time for the recurring bit. Every episode, we run something through Thomas Sowell's four questions, because Sowell spent an entire career doing what almost nobody in Washington is willing to do. Asking what a policy actually does instead of what it sounds like when a press secretary says it out loud. His exact words, there are no solutions, only trade-offs. This week's subject, the next spending package, somebody in Washington is going to hand you with a bow on it. Question one, compared to what? Every dollar spent on program A is a dollar that isn't available for program B or for a tax cut or for simply staying in your own pocket. There is no such thing as spending money in a vacuum. There is only spending it here instead of there. Question two, at what cost? Not the sticker price they announce at the podium, the real cost financed through debt that somebody someday has to actually pay off plus interest, plus the opportunity cost of everything that debt crowds out down the road. Question three, who pays? Not the rich, not corporations, not whatever villain fits the campaign ad. Ultimately, costs get passed to consumers, to workers through wages, to your kids through the debt they inherit without ever getting a vote on it. Somebody always pays. The only question is whether they know it's happening. Question four. Who decides? A senator you've never met, an agency staffed by people you didn't elect and can't fire. Or you, through a system built specifically to keep that decision as close to your front door as the Constitution could manage. Run every promise through those four questions before you clap for it. That's not cynicism. Sowell's whole point was the opposite of cynicism. It's just refusing to let a good feeling substitute for good

Rights Are Not Government Gifts

arithmetic. Here's a mistake I hear constantly from smart people who should know better. The Constitution gives me my rights. No, it doesn't. Read it again. The Declaration of Independence says we're endowed by our Creator with unalienable rights, meaning you had them before there was a United States, before there was a Congress, before there was a single government building standing anywhere on this continent. The Constitution's actual job is defense, not distribution. That's why the First Amendment doesn't say citizens may speak. It says Congress shall make no law. Read that phrasing again. It's not a permission slip handed down to you. It's a leash clipped onto government's collar. Five words, and they cover your religion, your speech, your press, your right to assemble, and your right to walk up to the government itself and tell it exactly what you think of its performance review. And here's the part that separates people who actually believe in free speech from people who just like free speech when it agrees with them. The test isn't whether you'll defend speech you like. Anybody can do that. The test is whether you'll defend speech that makes your skin crawl. Same with religious liberty. It's not tested by the popular faith in the room. It's tested by the unpopular one. Same with due process. It's not tested by protecting people you already like. It's tested by protecting the person the whole neighborhood already decided is guilty. That's the genius baked into the design. It protects the unpopular precisely because the popular never needed protecting in the first place. People treat the Bill of Rights like a government gift basket. Here's your speech, here's your religion, enjoy the swag bag. Flip that entirely. It's not a gift basket. It's a warning label, and the warning is aimed at government, not at you. First Amendment, government, hands-off speech, faith, press, assembly, and petition. Second Amendment, government, the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. No asterisk, no small print exception hiding in a government pamphlet somewhere. Fourth Amendment, government, no unreasonable searches or seizures, stay out of the house, the papers and the effects without cause. Fifth Amendment, government, no taking life, liberty, or property without due process, and nobody can be forced to testify against himself. Sixth Amendment, government, the accused gets a speedy public trial with a lawyer, not a secret process behind a closed door. Eighth Amendment, government, no cruel and unusual punishment, no excessive bail used as a backdoor punishment before anyone's even been convicted. Ninth Amendment, government, don't assume this list is the whole inventory. The people have rights beyond what fit on this particular piece of parchment. Tenth Amendment, government. Whatever power isn't specifically handed to you belongs to the states or to the people. Meaning most of what actually touches your daily life was never supposed to be your business in the first place. Ten separate fences, ten separate places where the founders looked at government and said, thus far, and not one inch further, the citizen was never meant to be a subject standing hat in hand before the state. The state was built to answer to the citizen. Somewhere along the way, a lot of people forgot which direction that arrow

Republic Versus Pure Democracy

points. I need you to stop calling America a pure democracy because it isn't one, and the distinction isn't some pedantic history teacher gotcha. It's the entire safety mechanism. Pure democracy means majority rule, full stop, no exceptions. 51% gets whatever it wants, including the rights of the other 49%. The founders looked directly at that idea and rejected it because a right that only survives as long as it's popular was never actually a right. It was a permission slip with an expiration date, and the crowd holds the pen that fills in the date. That's exactly why free speech survives even when the speech is hated by 90% of the room. Why due process protects a defendant the public has already convicted on social media before the trial even started? Why religious liberty covers a belief that isn't fashionable this decade? Article 6 settles the entire argument about who's actually in charge here. This Constitution shall be the supreme law of the land. Not the president, not Congress, not a cable news chiron, not a hashtag with 40 million views, not a 51% majority that showed up on a random Tuesday. The Constitution and every single person in government, from the top of the org chart to the bottom, answers to it, no exceptions carved out for anybody having a particularly good week. The instant a ruler starts standing above the law instead of underneath it, the Republic already has a crack in the foundation, whether the evening news has gotten around to mentioning it yet or not. Founders’ Warnings About Party And Ignorance

bit. This is where dead men in powdered wigs get the last word on an argument still happening on television tonight. George Washington, from his farewell address on the baneful effects of the spirit of party, his way of describing what we'd call rabid partisanship today. He warned that factions would eventually care more about beating the other team than governing the country, and that troublemakers, foreign and domestic, would happily exploit that division to weaken the whole thing from the inside. Read that next to literally any comment section in America right now, and it stops sounding like history homework. It starts sounding like a diagnosis written 230 years early. Washington wasn't against disagreement. These men argued nonstop. That's how the whole constitution got built. He was against the specific rot where loyalty to a jersey replaces loyalty to a country, where the question stops being, what does the law require, and turns into what does my side need to win this week? That warning doesn't pick a party. It indicts both of them equally then and now. James Madison gets the next word on why an ignorant electorate is a gift to anyone hoping to abuse power. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance, and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives. Translation, if you don't know how your own government works, somebody less scrupulous than you will happily explain it to you in whatever version benefits the most. John Adams closes this round with the one that stings the most. Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other. He wasn't lobbying for a state church. He was making a much colder point. A document is only as good as the people who are supposed to live by it. Self-government requires self-control. And if a people can't govern themselves on the inside, something else will eventually govern them from the outside, and it will not ask permission first. The Republic has already been standing in the blast radius more than once. Worth remembering because can it endure isn't a new question we invented this year on a podcast. It's the oldest question we've got. The Civil War, the country split clean in half, over 600,000 dead, and the union held not automatically, not by magic, but because enough people were willing to pay an enormous price to keep it together. And because the country rebuilt afterward on the promise that the Constitution's guarantees applied to everybody, not just the people who'd been included the first time around. The Great Depression, a quarter of the workforce unemployed, real fear across the world that slow democratic government simply couldn't outrespond the fast authoritarian regimes rising in Europe at the exact same moment. The system bent under that weight. It didn't break. World War II, a two-front global war against enemies who had already demonstrated in real time exactly what happens when constitutional government gets replaced by something darker. America fought that war as a republic and came home from it still a republic. No small thing, historically speaking, in September 11, 2001. An attack specifically designed to prove that open, argumentative, divided societies are too soft and too distracted to defend themselves. The response wasn't flawless, and reasonable people can debate plenty of decisions made in the years after. But the government didn't collapse, the constitution didn't get shredded and replaced, and the courts kept functioning even in the thick of the fear. None of that happened on autopilot. Every single one of those moments required citizens who chose actively to hold the thing together instead of letting it come apart in their hands. That's the actual pattern across 250 years. The Republic doesn't survive by accident. It survives because somebody, every single generation, decides it's worth the price of keeping.

Seven Modern Fights Through The Constitution

Let's take seven fights that are currently eating cable news alive and run every one of them through the framework instead of through the outrage. Executive orders. When any president, either party, doesn't matter, starts governing heavily by executive order, the question isn't, do I like this particular policy? The question is, is he enforcing a law Congress already passed, or effectively writing a brand new one from the Oval Office? Article 1, put the pen for new law in Congress's hand. If Congress won't use that pen, the fix is voting them out, not applauding whoever's willing to skip the line. Federal agencies, when an unelected agency writes a rule that reshapes an entire industry overnight, ask who actually handed them that authority and who you get to hold accountable when it goes sideways. Lawmaking is supposed to trace back to somebody you can fire at the ballot box. An org chart three layers deep in an alphabet soup agency doesn't clear that bar. Free speech online. When platforms, agencies, or an online mob go after speech somebody doesn't like, the question is whether you'll defend the right when it's speech you personally can't stand. The First Amendment was never built for the easy case. It was built for exactly this one. Digital privacy. The Fourth Amendment is 230 years older than the smartphone, but the principle it's built on doesn't have an expiration date. Unreasonable search is unreasonable search, whether it's a stranger going through your desk drawer or a company quietly harvesting your location data, government spending and debt, run it straight through the compared to what questions from earlier this episode. Every program gets marketed as compassion. Compassion still has to answer for the invoice, and the invoice always lands on somebody, usually somebody who never got a vote on the promise that created it. Crime and due process. A serious republic holds two things at once without flinching: the rights of the accused and the safety of everybody else on the block. Anybody who tells you it's only ever one or the other is selling you a bumper sticker, not a policy, border security and the rule of law. A nation can hold real compassion and still insist its own laws mean something when enforced. Sovereignty and mercy were never actually opposites. Pretending enforcement doesn't matter just turns the rule of law into the suggestion of law, and a suggestion isn't binding on anybody. Run any headline you see this week through that same filter. Where's the authority? Where's the limit? Who's accountable? What's the actual cost? And watch how fast the noise quiet down into an actual argument you can follow. Rapid fire.

Five Myths About Your Rights

Five things most Americans believe about their own rights that flatly aren't true. And I guarantee at least one of these has come out of somebody's mouth at your own dinner table. Myth one The Constitution gives me free speech. Wrong. It restricts government from Taking speech away. Your employer isn't bound by the First Amendment. A private platform isn't bound by the First Amendment. Only the government is on that leash. Myth two, my rights are unlimited, also wrong. Rights come with edges. You don't get to falsely scream fire in a packed theater and call the resulting stampede protected expression. Liberty and license are two different words for a reason. Myth three. Whatever the Supreme Court says this year is permanent, unchangeable truth forever. Nope. The court has reversed its own prior rulings before, more than once, and the entire amendment process exists precisely because no single ruling was ever meant to sit beyond challenge for all time. Myth four. States don't have real power anymore. It's all federal now. False. And it's not close. The Tenth Amendment reserves everything not specifically handed to Washington, which covers most of what actually touches your daily life. Education, most criminal law, most business regulation, all overwhelmingly state and local business. Myth five: compromise means abandoning your principles. This one does the most damage of all five. The Constitution itself is a document built entirely out of compromise between states that agreed on almost nothing else. Bending on process is not the same thing as surrendering on principle. And confusing the two is how you end up with permanent gridlock and zero results. What Citizenship Actually Costs

what's in it. The Constitution isn't a machine that runs itself on autopilot while you go about your day. It requires a specific kind of citizen, and it always has, from the very first sentence. It requires somebody who understands rights arrive with duties attached, no separate purchase required, somebody who can lose an argument in public without trying to silence the person who won it. Somebody who can win an election without deciding the other half of the country is now the enemy. Somebody willing to hold their own side accountable first before they ever get around to lecturing the other side. John Adams already told us the stakes. Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other. Translation: self-government requires self-control. If citizens can't restrain themselves, something else eventually restrains them instead, and it will not be gentle about the terms. If citizens stop reading the actual Constitution, somebody else will happily interpret it for them in whatever version benefits that somebody most. If parents stop teaching liberty at the kitchen table, the culture downstream will teach dependency instead, and it won't send a permission slip home first. If schools trade civics for slogans, the next generation inherits rights they can't even name, let alone defend when it actually matters. None of that is abstract. It plays out in your living room, your school board meeting, your city council, your own conversations at Thanksgiving. Every single day, the Republic is either being renewed a little or spent down a little. There is no neutral setting close. Franklin left us the challenge. A republic, if you can keep it. Madison left us the reason. If men were angels, no government would be necessary. Adams left us the condition. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. Washington left us the warning, watch the spirit of party before it grows stronger than the love of country. Soul left us the discipline compared to what? And the Constitution itself left us the actual assignment. Three words right at the very top, we the people. This country has already survived a civil war, a depression, a world war, and an attack built specifically to prove it couldn't defend itself. It survived every single one of those because citizens decided out loud and in practice that it was worth the cost of keeping. It don't just admire the Constitution like it's a museum piece behind glass. Understand it. Don't just quote it when it's convenient. Live by it, especially when it isn't. To live for the Constitution, then is to reject caricature on both sides, to defend the Second Amendment neither recklessly nor fearfully, but soberly and constitutionally. It demands that gun owners honor restraint as faithfully as they claim liberty, and that advocates of regulation confront the founder's warning that concentrated power, once unopposed, rarely relinquishes itself voluntarily. That is not ideology. That is constitutional realism, spoken plainly by the men who built the republic. Faith, once insulated as constitutional liberty, is increasingly treated as a tolerated inconvenience. Religious freedom is not freedom of interior thought under conditional license. It is the freedom to live truth publicly without being coerced into political silence. When the state arrogates authority over moral expression, it crosses from civil administration into secular priesthood. And when government becomes priest, it does not merely regulate conduct, it demands confession.

War Powers, Regulation, And Real Harm

And then we arrive at the founder's greatest fear, the permanent war state. The Constitution placed war powers in Congress because war dissolves liberty faster than any legal solvent. Warnings against habitual foreign entanglements have been replaced by permanent global presence. We no longer declare, we simply persist. Endless war demands endless appropriation. Endless appropriation requires endless fear. Fear has become the most reliable commodity of modern governance, because frightened citizens are easier to manage than educated ones. Let me make this human because constitutional erosion is not an academic parlor game. It is a lived injury. A veteran I worked with disciplined multiple deployments, followed every rule, and built a logistics firm. Then a regulatory reinterpretation issued three agencies removed from Congress retroactively altered compliance. No hearing, no vote, no warning. Contracts froze overnight. Employees lost paychecks. The business collapsed not because he failed, but because power traveled through unelected channels no ballot could touch. I have seen the same with a rancher whose water rights vanished under a reinterpretation, no legislature debated, with parents investigated not for abuse, but for deviation from mandated doctrine, and with hospitals suffocating under reimbursement formulas drafted by committees immune from electoral consequence. The mechanism is always identical. Authority migrates out of representation and into permanence to the work. The Federalist papers warned us plainly that liberty survives only under conditions: restraint over impulse, courage over convenience, and responsibility over entitlement. James Madison told us in Federalist number 51 that if men were angels, no government would be necessary, reminding us that liberty cannot exist without restraint because human impulse is unreliable and power, left unchecked, always seeks more. In Federalist number 10, Madison went further, warning that free societies rarely fall to kings, they fall to factions. When passion overwhelms reason and discipline gives way to impulse, Alexander Hamilton was just as direct. In Federalist number 15, he warned that a republic fails when laws are treated as suggestions rather than obligations, when obedience becomes selective and convenience replaces duty. In Federalist No. 57, Madison made clear that self-government presumes moral responsibility, that rights divorced from virtue and accountability cannot endure. And in Federalist No. 68, Hamilton deliberately designed a system that frustrates speed and ease because liberty requires patience and courage, not efficiency, at the expense of judgment. Finally, in Federalist No. 78, Hamilton made the principle unmistakable. Even popular will must submit to constitutional law because no act, no matter how popular, can be valid if it violates the Constitution. Taken together, Madison and Hamilton left us one unmistakable conclusion. Freedom does not mean doing whatever we want, it means governing ourselves by law, especially when the law tells us no. And let me be equally clear about something else.

The Oath Above Party And Personality

This show is not about attacking someone's views or opinions. Disagreement is not the enemy of a republic. Ignorance is. Debate is not the problem. Abandoning constitutional boundaries is. This is not about left or right, red or blue, my side or your side. Let me ask this plainly, because pretending this is complicated is how republics die. What matters more to you, your party, your tribe, your outrage, or your country. I didn't fight in two wars so the Constitution could be optional. I didn't leave pieces of myself on foreign soil so grown adults could replace law with feelings and call it patriotism. I raised my right hand and swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, not when it was convenient, not when it favored my side, but always. That oath was not symbolic. It was a contract. It demanded fidelity to principle over personality, to law over loyalty, and to the republic over my own comfort. It required obedience to a document designed to restrain power, even when that power claimed to be acting for our own good. When a citizen places party above constitution, that oath is broken. When a movement demands loyalty before law, tyranny has already entered the room. And when people who call themselves patriots cheer the erosion of limits because it hurts the right enemy, they are not defending the republic. They are dismantling it. So stop dodging the question. If your allegiance shifts with election results, you don't believe in the Constitution. If your principles collapse under pressure, you never understood them. And if you think liberty survives without discipline, history has already proven you wrong. The oath was clear. The Constitution is still binding. The only thing left undecided is who still deserves to speak in its name. Let me ask this plainly, because pretending this is complicated is how republics die. If you demand power today, are you willing to live under that same power tomorrow when your enemies inherit it? If the rule you're cheering were enforced against you, would you still call it justice? If everyone governed the way you are arguing right now, would the Republic survive? This is about the Constitution. It is about whether we still believe in a system of self-government restrained by law, grounded in structure, and sustained by citizens, willing to place principle above passion. It is about whether we can argue fiercely without abandoning the rules that make argument meaningful in the first place. This is more than political rhetoric. This is not entertainment.
